.cardiff marketby ~mi4

Scraps©2006-2013 ~mi4
so, this is my entry for the street contest. it was taken in october at a market in cardiff, wales. we had to shoot a project for my photojournalism course there.

i decided to use my 28-75mm f/2.8 lense for this and just lock it at 28mm so that i had to force myself to get closer to subjects. the camera is a really cheap canon slr (300x), and probably also the reason why im taking part in this contest.

the film was a kodak tri-x which i pushed to 1600 because here in wales, as you may know, it rains a lot. so the sky is mostly is very dark and i figured asa 1600 with f/2.8 should work out. the tri-x i find a very good choice to push since the grain is so fine that even at 1600 its almost not visible. and of course, the contrast is quite strong, which i find quite appealing.

the aperture for this was f/2.8 since i had to shoot wide open (this was shot inside in a building where the market was) to not get too slow shutter speeds. here the shutter speed was around 1/90. you can barely see the movement of the girls hands eating the apple on the print.

i took this shot because i thought it was quite funny to see this massive amount of fruits in the foreground and then the person who was trying to sell these, eat one of these fruits. they must have been good then, i reckon.

developed the roll in kodak hc-110 for 18min and printed it on ilford rc pearl at grad 2 1/2. did quite a lot of burning around the person since the light was quite strong on the fruits. then scanned the print with my crappy epson perfection 3170. and here we go.

i usually never write that much about my photos but i read the entry requirements for this contest again just now and well, i hope the explanation and motivation is sufficient enough.

It's a bit busy for my tastes, but perhaps that's what you were wanting to do, what with markets being so hurried and populated. The contrast is superb, though!

Really nice entry. I like how the girl's head is like the same size of the fruit in the foreground. What seems like a simple shot, really gets something extra from her activity.
I find the harsh contrast to be a bit too distracting though. But overall a very pleasing image.

the contrast is quite harsh indeed, but the thing is the the neg. was already pretty harsh since while developing (usual time 16min) the firealarm went off and i had to take my dev. tank with me outside. the whole thing was fire alarm training and lasted about 3 minutes. so all in all i quite overdeveloped the film. i was quite mad at that time but i think with some images it fits quite well, e.g. the portrait of the old guy with the mohawk. oh well...

thanks for your comments. as always :P

Oh how fucked that fire alarm thing is! Argh, frustrating! All in all the damage isn't that bad, considering those extra minutes.

And as always, my comments are gladly given ;)
